The 2013 UT Latino Male Symposium
Friday, June 7th, 2013, 8am-2pm, Student Activity Center (SAC) Ballroom
Please mark your calendars! You are cordially invited to the 2013 UT Latino Male Symposium, Friday, June 7th, 2013 (8am-2pm), at the Student Activities Center Ballroom (2201 Speedway, Austin, TX 78712) on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.
Latino male students have among the lowest high school graduation and post-secondary enrollment rates in the country, and this symposium seeks to raise critical awareness and instigate action on the part of educational and community stakeholders. Since 2011, we have convened this meeting to discuss this ongoing educational crisis facing our communities and our state. Over 500 professionals have joined us in the last two years to advance this important discussion, and we expect a great turnout for the 2013 Symposium.
The 2013 UT Latino Male Symposium will focus on three areas:
1.) Lessons Learned: A report from three years of research on Latino males in Texas colleges and universities
Dr. Victor Saenz, Executive Director, Project MALES
With Special Guest Speaker:
Hon. Mary Gonzalez, Texas State Representative, District 75
Our symposium will close with our luncheon Keynote Speaker, Dr. Luis Ponjuan, Associate Professor, Educational Administration and Human Resource Development, Texas A&M University. Dr. Ponjuan is the co-founder of Project MALES, and he recently joined the faculty of Texas A&M University in fall 2012. His talk will focus on the current and future challenges we face in our work with males of color in Education, and he will also discuss the development of our newest project, the Texas Education Consortium for Male Student Success.
The 2013 UT Latino Male Symposium is co-hosted by Project MALES (Mentoring to Achieve Latino Educational Success) and the Division of Diversity & Community Engagement at UT-Austin. It is also made possible through generous support from the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Gates Millennium Scholars Program,TG, the Greater Texas Foundation, and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
